Time in this dissertation is handled in a day-to-day fashion, whereby Lewis is in the schools as a participant observer on a daily basis. Lewis conducted her ethnographic research over a period of 17 months. She began her study in January by trying to locate 3 schools in Bayside, CA. She chose this one geographic region because of the diversity in CA, she knew the area, and knew that CA was full of racial issues. Through extensive research and her own critiquing she settled on the suburban, urban, and alternative schools where she saw great diversity, good leadership within the schools and where she would be welcomed. The actual observation/participation, interviews (formal and informal)took place over the course of the school year. By doing this longitudinal study, Lewis allowed the phenomenon of race in teh schools to be brought forth. Her study allows one in to the daily lives of the school systems that were studied, and through "bringing us in" allows us to see that race is reproduced inthe schools, whether concsiously or uncocsiously, we can see that race has been in the schools for years and the schools are still a breeding ground for race. Participants and their experiences are brought to life in this study. Through thr interviews and observation one can just "Feel" the experiences that are shared by the participants-thereby allowing us to see how race has shaped them. By being in the schools for a year, the researcher became to be seen as a possible go to in situations and was asked for advice in dealing with certain racial situations on various accounts -see pg. 193.
